Changes to Note for Tax Year 2008:
- Vital Social Security Wage Base Fields Expanded
In 2008, when the SS Wage Base reached $102,000 specific SS wage base field size limitations of 99,999.99 had to be expanded to 999,999.99. These changes affected all applicable W-2 reporting functions and certain payroll reports. The 2008 Year-End Update ensures proper SS wage base cut-off amounts are calculated.
|
- Electronic W-2 Reporting Made Easy
Report your W-2s electronically by using the Payroll Magnetic W-2 Reporting function. Quickly create a magnetic W-2 file that you can upload electronically to the SSA website. After the magnetic file is created, we now display important filing information to help expedite the process of reporting electronically. Know exactly what your magnetic W-2 file name is, where it is located on your computer, and where to upload the file with the SSA. For added assurance, run AccuWage 2008 to quickly verify your file's authenticity prior to uploading. For more information or to download AccuWage 2008, go to: http://www.ssa.gov/employer/accuwage/index.html.
(Reminder: Users with over 250 W-2 forms must submit their W-2s electronically. Users with less than 250 W-2 forms may optionally submit W-2s electronically.)
|
- Employee SS# Validation Report Updated
The Employee Social Security Number Validation Report has had valid SS number ranges updated. Based on allocated Social Security numbers issued by the SSA, this report will enable employers to quickly verify the authenticity of employee social security numbers.
|
- New SS Wage Base Maximum for 2008
The social security wage base for 2008 was changed to $102,000. While you may still update Federal tax tables within Payroll, programs for W-2 reporting have been updated with the new Social Security wage maximum for 2008.
|
- W-2 Magnetic Media Record Changes
Specific format changes including field name for Personal Identification Number (PIN) of the RA record has been changed to User Identification (User ID). Specific working storage fields had to be expanded to accommodate combined SS wage and insurance premium amounts.
|
- 1099 Magnetic Media Record Changes
Magnetic media reporting periods have been updated from 2007 to 2008. Specific format changes including Payer, Payee and Transmitter record field position changes for 2008.
|
- New Electronic Filing Deadline
For magnetic W-2 filers, the filing deadline has been extended to March 31, 2009. To file W-2’s electronically, go to the SSA BSO website at: www.ssa.gov/employer

401(k) Catch Up Plan:
As a result of the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, the US government has implemented a "401(k) catch up" program offered to employees over 50 years of age, that are currently on a 401(k) plan through their employer. The 401(k) catch up amount of $1000 will increase by $1000 each year until the year 2007. It is an elective contribution and requires separate reporting to most 401(k) financial institutions. Backed by sound advise from Custom Software Experts, Microsoft Great Plains has implemented 401(k) catch up functionality as part of RealWorld Classic versions 9.1, 9.0 and 8.6. Now available from Custom Software Experts is the 401(k) Catch Up enhancement, designed specifically for prior RealWorld Classic versions to meet these requirements. Contact Us if you need to implement
the 401(k) Catch Up Plan for your employees.
